I partnered with EeJayCee, Inc., a digital agency, to develop high quality content such as newsletters, social media content, sales materials, and presentations for clients. Additionally, I wrote bi-weekly blog posts, including the one below, to help inform and empower clients about digital marketing strategies.

10 Ways to Drive Newsletter Readership and Engagement written by Natalie Drugan and published by EeJayCee, Inc.

Belief it or not, e-newsletters are still a great way to connect with your desired audience, and they can even help reinforce your other online brand properties (e.g., web site, social media).

Email newsletter open rates range by industry, but generally they have a 12-25% open rate when executed properly. These rates can also differ by reader type, which offers an array of opportunities for targeting the right audience.

Here are 10 ways to create newsletters that will attract and engage readers:

  1. Keep it simple and include teasers and content previews via short, enticing subject lines and content summaries with links to full articles/content.

  2. Showcase your company’s blog posts, which allow you to recycle original content and keep readers on your owned/branded properties.

  3. Share top news stories and articles that are relevant to your business and industry; keep your audience informed about industry happenings

  4. Showcase your favorite tweets from clients, top followers and key influencers; keep your newsletter social

  5. Include fun and/or inspirational content (cartoons, quote of the week); this also gives you the opportunity to showcase your brand personality

  6. Share client stories, triumphs and testimonials; these add credibility and spark interest in your business.

  7. Include contact information (e.g., email, phone number, web site) and calls-to-action (e.g., contact us, sign-up for our webinar)

  8. Encourage social interactions via social buttons (Twitter, Facebook); keep the conversations going through multiple touch points

  9. Showcase your favorite image or video via Pinterest, Instagram, etc.; this is also a great way to link readers to your other social/online properties.

  10. Highlight your company’s latest happenings (e.g., speaking engagements, press coverage); these let your audience know what you’ve been up to and can spark curiosity.

With these 10 tips you can create a powerful brand newsletter that works alongside your other marketing vehicles and online properties to create a holistic brand experience.

Remember to keep it simple, interesting, informative, relevant, enjoyable and interactive.
